Your dog is probably more like a member of your family than a pet. Many devoted pet owners want to take extra special care of their furry family members. Even with the best of intentions your pet can be put into dangerous situations and as responsible pet owners, you want to make sure that you do not inadvertently put your beloved dogs into harms way.
Regardless of how well-trained your dog is, you should never go outside of your fenced in yard without first putting your dog on his or her leash. Many dog owners will get into a bad habit of walking out to the mailbox our running out to the car and letting their dog tag along for company or a quick bathroom break outside. This is fine as long as you remember to put your dog on a leash! You never know when something is going to catch your dogs attention and he or she will take off after a cat or a bird or to greet a friendly neighbor and run out into the middle of the street.
Speaking of leash wearing, it is important to make sure that your dog is safe while on their leash. It is always a good idea to keep your dog in a harness instead of having the leash simply attached to his or her collar. A nice soft harness that distributes the force of the leash over the dog’s chest instead of always pulling at their neck is not only much more comfortable for the dog day-to-day but can also help prevent injury from accidental pulling or tugging by the dog.
Just like you would childproof your home if you have a young child, you should do the same for your curious dog. Much like children, dogs do not read warning labels. You should lock up cabinets where you keep your household cleaning chemicals and any other areas where you store potentially poisonous chemicals. It is also very important to make sure that your dog cannot get into your garbage cans (both inside and out). What might seem like a nice snack to your dog could actually be extremely poisonous. Everyday items that your family might enjoy like chocolate, onions, or grapes could cause extreme harm to your family pet if he or she gets into the trash or into your pantry or other places where potentially harmful items could be stored. It may seem obvious, but if you are treating your house for pests like bugs or mice, you must take extra precaution to make sure that your curious critter does not inadvertently ingest poison or inhale toxic fumes while sniffing around.
Our pets are delightful four legged extensions of our families. We should do our part to make sure they stay as safe as possible. Taking a few simple precautions with your dog can help keep him or her safe while out and about with you and also in the comfort of their own home.
